Milk glass has a long and interesting history!

Origins (16th century Venice)
The technique dates back to Venetian glassmakers in the 1500s, who developed an opaque white glass called "lattimo" (from latte, milk) by adding tin oxide or bone ash to molten glass. It was originally sought-after as an affordable stand-in for prized white porcelain from China, which Europeans couldn't yet produce themselves.

Victorian boom (mid-to-late 1800s)
Milk glass really took off in Europe and America during the Victorian era. Glassmakers in England, France, and the U.S. started mass-producing it for tableware, vases, and decorative pieces. It fit right into Victorian taste for ornate patterns: lacy edges, covered "hen on nest" boxes, that kind of thing.

Mid-century popularity
Milk glass had another major wave from the 1950s - 60s, when it became a staple of American kitchens and dining tables. Companies like Fenton, Westmoreland, Anchor Hocking (Fire-King), and McKee churned out milk glass dishware, mugs, and serving pieces, often in the clean, functional shapes associated with mid-century design.

Why it endures
Part of the appeal has always been that milky, slightly luminous opacity - it reads as both elegant and homey, vintage and practical. It also happens to be tough and stackable, which is exactly why it worked so well for daily-use tableware back then (and why we love it now!)
